U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Proposes Biometric Airport and Seaport Exit Procedures

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on April 22, 2008, a notice of proposed rulemaking that will establish biometric exit procedures at all U.S. airports and seaports. Establishing biometric exit procedures are essential for ensuring the integrity of the nation's immigration system. DHS's exit proposal would require non-U.S. citizens, who provide biometric identifiers for admission to the United States, to also provide biometric identifiers--digital fingerprints--when departing the country from airports or seaports.
DHS Expands Biometrics-at-Sea Program to the Florida Straits: Fingerprints Help Apprehend and Deter Illegal Migrants Attempting U.S. Entry

US-VISIT and the U.S. Coast Guard announced today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is expanding the operation of their successful biometrics-at-sea program to the south Florida Straits. The program has collected biometric data from 1,513 migrants, prosecuted 118 of those migrants, and helped reduce the flow of illegal migration by nearly 50 percent. The biometrics-at-sea program, initiated last November, is an information sharing effort between US-VISIT and the U.S. Coast Guard to address the challenge of identifying illegal migrants who are interdicted at sea. The success of the program has significantly advanced the effort to develop effective mobile solutions for biometric collection and analysis, and represents another step in the department's comprehensive strategy to secure the nation's borders.
Department Of Homeland Security (DHS) Begins Collecting 10 Fingerprints From International Visitors At Washington Dulles International Airport

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now collecting additional fingerprints from international visitors as part of the department's upgrade from two to 10 fingerprint collection in order to enhance security and improve accuracy. Dulles International Airport became the first port of entry to collect additional fingerprints from visitors on November 29, 2007. Ten-fingerprint collection will begin at 287 other U.S. ports of entry by the end of 2008. DHS's US VISIT program, in cooperation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is leading the transition to a 10 fingerprint collection standard. DHS uses biometrics--digital fingerprints and photographs--to prevent the use of fraudulent documents, protect visitors from identity theft and stop thousands of criminals and immigration violators from entering the United States.
