No Cloned Animals in Organic Food -- USDA Advisory Panel Vote Applauded

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB), voted at their spring meeting in Washington, DC to exclude cloned animals, their offspring, and any food products from cloned animals from the organic sector. The expert advisory panel to the USDA's National Organic Program made it clear with their vote that organic agriculture should not allow the use of cloned animals or their offspring in the production of organic food. "This is a victory for farmers, consumers and retailers who want to protect organic food and agriculture from a highly controversial and experimental technology," said Will Fantle of The Cornucopia Institute, a farm policy and organic watchdog group.
USDA Criticized for Helping 'Industrialize' Organic Farming

Proposed new federal organic livestock regulations are coming under sharp criticism for failing to close critical loopholes that are allowing a handful of factory-scale dairy farms in western states to continue bringing into their milk herd new animals raised with antibiotics, hormones, and genetically engineered feed produced with toxic pesticides. The new rules ignore recommendations endorsed by the USDA’s own expert advisory panel, the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB). (PRWeb May 10, 2006)

Organic Watchdog Sues USDA: Cornucopia Institute Seeks Records on Lack of Organic Food Standards Enforcement

The Cornucopia Institute has filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking to compel the USDA to provide public records sought through several Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. The Institute is a Wisconsin-based farm policy research group and organic food watchdog. “We have gone into federal court because the USDA has been unwilling to provide us with important records that would help us and our farmer-members and consumers understand why the USDA has delayed enforcement of key federal organic farming standards for five years,” said Will Fantle, the Institute’s Research Director. “These are documents that they are obligated, by law, to share with the public.” (PRWeb Apr 13, 2006)

The report and scorecard, rating 68 different organic dairy name-brands and private-labels, was produced by The Cornucopia Institute, a Wisconsin-based farm policy research group. The Cornucopia Institute’s report was a year in the making and involved in-depth research and surveys of the nation’s dairy product manufacturers located in every region of the country.

A letter to USDA Secretary Mike Johannes, from one of the nation’s most aggressive organic food and farming watchdogs, asked the Secretary to personally intervene in rebuilding the once promising collaborative environment that existed between the organic community and its regulators. In its letter, the Cornucopia Institute, a Wisconsin-based farm policy research group, called the current working relationship between the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) and industry stakeholders, farmers, consumers, and processors “very unhealthy” and asked that Secretary Johanns intercede, bringing in new management from outside of the Department, to correct what the group has previously labeled a poisoned environment.
Organic Farmers Lose Patience with USDA; Cornucopia Files FOIA Probing USDA Rejection of Pasture Guidance

Organic family farmers are again expressing frustration over the lack of action by the USDA to enforce the requirement of pasture for organic cattle. They attended the Aug. 15–17 meeting of the National Organic Standards Board to protest the growing number of factory farms that are keeping their cows in confinement conditions while producing organic milk. Now The Cornucopia Institute has filed a FOIA with the USDA seeking reasons why the agency is balking on enforcement. (PRWeb Aug 26, 2005)

Dean/Horizon Feedlot Dairy Accused of Masquerading as an Organic Farm

The Cornucopia Institute filed two formal complaints today with the USDA’s Office of Compliance asking them to initiate investigations into alleged violations of the federal organic law by factory farms operating in Idaho and California. The complaints ask the USDA to investigate whether it is legal to confine cows in an industrial setting, without access to pasture, and still label milk and dairy products organic. The 4000-head Idaho factory farm is owned and managed by country's largest organic dairy marketer, Dean/Horizon. The California industrial farm – owned by Case Vander Eyk, Jr. and with 10,000 cows split between its organic and conventional operation – also supplies Dean/Horizon with milk. Similar factory farm operations in Idaho and California are also under investigation by The Cornucopia Institute and will likely be targeted with formal complaints to the USDA in the near future.
