Abstinence Only - Running From Your Past

What’s driving the abstinence-only debate? A combination of political and religious opportunism mixed with some genuine concern, a good dose of parental confusion and a whole lot of hypocrisy. Is everyone forgetting when they were teenagers? Or are they remembering their past all too clearly and using a rigid moral agenda to somehow reconcile their own sexual history. Unfortunately it’s not working; in a recent report by Advocates for Youth, five years of abstinence-only programs were shown to have little effect on teen behavior. And parents who are relying on abstinence-only as their solution to teen sexuality, are often missing out on the one strategy that has been shown to work; opening the door to honest one-on-one conversations with their kids about sex.
Everyone Remembers Their First Time

With stories on ‘friends with benefits’ and promiscuous sexual behavior, teen sexuality is often portrayed in the media as trivial and inconsequential. Yet the truth is that for many people, first sexual experiences are a major event; they live within us for years to come and often impact our lives in significant ways. In his new book, ‘First Love / Remembrances’, author Howard B. Schiffer went around the world and interviewed a wide variety of people (young and old, gay and straight, different economic backgrounds and cultures) about; their first time having sex, their first time making love (often two entirely different experiences) and their first romances. ‘First Love’ follows the heart’s journey as we begin to enter the world of intimacy and beckons young people to enter this territory with their eyes and hearts wide open.
The Hardest Talk A Parent Ever Has To Give

October is ‘Let’s Talk Month’, a campaign by Advocates For Youth to focus attention on the importance of parent/child communication about sexuality. With all of the controversy surrounding sex education in our schools, it would seem most parents would jump at the opportunity to influence their teenager’s sexual behavior. Yet most parents are terrified of having ‘The Sex Talk’ with their children. Many adults say it is the hardest talk they ever have to give and most don’t even know where to start. Surveys from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy have shown that for teens, parents are the preferred source of information about pregnancy and birth control. Also, 88% of teens said it would be easier to postpone sexual activity and avoid teen pregnancy if they were able to have more open and honest conversations with their parents. It’s time for parents to begin asking ‘Why is it so difficult for me to begin talking with my teenager about sex?’ (PRWeb Oct 15, 2004)

The Hidden Danger Behind Abstinence-Only

This country has spent over $900 Million in the last 5 years on abstinence-only sex education. Last week Advocates For Youth, reported that not only do these programs fail to improve teenage sexual behavior but they actually may result in poor decisions and increased risk once these teens do become sexually active. Most importantly, abstinence-only programs are fear-based. They introduce teens into the territory of sexuality with negative messaging that associates sexual feelings and activity with danger, shame, embarrassment, and risk. Not the healthiest messages for young people first entering into the realm of relationships. (PRWeb Oct 6, 2004)

Dad Writes Book On Sex & Love For Teenage Son!

The sex talk is one of the scariest conversations a parent ever has to give. Many parents fear that any discussion might encourage their children to be sexual. Those that choose to begin the dialogue often have little idea where to start. Howard B. Schiffer like many boomer parents faced the same dilemma when his son was coming of age. He said recently; “I realized that if I didn’t educate my son, the culture would and the idea of him getting all of his information about women from his friends, the internet and the media just wasn’t acceptable.” His one hour discussion with his son ended up taking six months. Schiffer turned his experience into a book; “How To Be The Best Lover – A Guide For Teenage Boys”. Now “Best Lover” has been drawing rave reviews from educators around the country who are calling it a major breakthrough in sex education for teens. (PRWeb Sep 27, 2004)

Teen Suicide: Not So Painless

Suicide is the third highest cause of death among teens (15-24). Among 5-14 year olds suicide rates have doubled in the past generation. Last year fifteen million prescriptions were written for antidepressants for children and youth. And on Tuesday the FDA acknowledged an increased suicide risk associate with children taking antidepressants. The mental health of our young people is worse off today than it was 50 years ago. But for years the National Institute of Health has been following a biomedical model that seeks a drug to solve every problem. It’s clearly been a massive failure. (PRWeb Sep 22, 2004)
