Education Commissioner Apologizes to North Atlantic Regional High School (NARHS)

In a rare, official government apology and retraction, the North Atlantic Regional High School in Lewiston, Maine, received an official letter from Maine’s Commissioner of Education. After false statements about this private school were given to the press, colleges, the military, and others, the school sought the assistance of Maine’s leaders. School administrator, Steve Moitozo, met with the State’s Assistant Attorney General, representatives from the Senate leadership, the State House Representative from the school’s district, the school’s attorney, and the Commissioner, Susan Gendron. When presented the facts of the case, the Commissioner took corrective action with her staff. (PRWeb Jun 27, 2006)

Florida’s Exit Exams Create Underclass “FCAT Refugee” Population - FCAT Refugees Can Bypass the FCATS for Their Diplomas from Maine High School

The "No Child Left Behind" laws, along with Florida’s "FCAT" penalty, are creating FCAT Refugees, a whole underclass of “lesser graduates” from Florida high schools. But there is hope in Maine. Refugees from Florida have transferred their high school credits to a Maine high school and earned their high school diploma. No FCAT and no exit exams are required in Maine. Students earn their diplomas by earning the necessary 17-1/2 high school credits. Students who have the credits are entitled to the diploma, no matter where they live, from the North Atlantic Regional High School. www.narhs.org (PRWeb Apr 29, 2005)

FCAT Refugees Look to Maine High School for Diploma, the FCAT Loophole, to Bypass Exit Exams

Students who cannot pass their high school exit exams are refugees of their states. For four years they did everything they were told to do, but in the end they could not pass this one, single, high stakes test. They find out, “Sorry, four years or not, good work or not, no diploma!” It doesn’t seem fair, but year after year exit exam refugees are made with every test. A Maine private school bypasses all of this to provide an answer. (PRWeb Jan 25, 2005)
