Written by first-time author Pamela J. Erickson, “The Memory Quilt” tells the story of Liisa Maki, a 14-year old Finnish-American girl, and her experiences the day of the fire that consumed the small northeastern Minnesota towns of Cloquet and Moose Lake. The title of the book refers to a family heirloom quilt that helps the next generation rediscover a piece of Maki family history lost during the 1918 Cloquet Fire. “The Memory Quilt” is one of three books nominated in the Juvenile-Young Adult Fiction category. The MIPA awards, a competition for excellence in independent or non-profit publishing, will be presented at the Minnesota Humanities Commission in St. Paul on Wednesday, May 11, 2005.
