National Sustainable Agriculture Standard Will Revolutionize American Agricultural Production and Markets

What could be the first national standard for sustainable agriculture in the United States--- the Sustainable Agriculture Practice Standard for Food, Fiber, and Biofuel Crop Producers and Agricultural Product Handlers and Processors (SCS-001) Draft Standard for Trial Use---was re-announced in the May 16, 2008 edition of ANSI Standards Action (http://www.ansi.org/news_publications/periodicals/standards_action/standards_action.aspx?menuid=7). This comprehensive standard for sustainable agriculture addresses the sustainability impacts of agricultural production and encompasses the entire agricultural product supply chain, including suppliers, seed providers, growers, processors, distributors, retailers, and end-users. As such, key objectives of the standard development process will be to establish best practices in sustainable crop production and handling and to develop a set of metrics that encourages continued improvement of the environmental, social, and economic sustainability impacts of agricultural products, at all levels of the supply chain.
Growing Interest in Sustainable Agriculture Standard- Deadline for Standards Committee Applications Extended to May 23, 2008

Since September 2007, Leonardo Academy has been promoting awareness of the development process of the Draft American National Standard for Trail Use for Sustainable Agriculture Practice, intended for subsequent approval as an American National Standard. National meetings have been held in Berkeley, California and Arlington, Virginia, in addition to three national teleconferences, to inform interested parties and stakeholders about this standard development process. Due to increasing interest in the development of this standard following the February 29, 2008 meeting in Arlington, Leonardo Academy has decided to extend the deadline for applications for the standard development committee to May 23, 2008. This extension has been implemented based on numerous requests to allow time for additional stakeholders to submit applications to participate on the standard development committee and/or supporting subcommittees. September 2007 World Conference and further announced that this event has earned Gold Level Certification for offsetting event emissions under Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener® Certification Program. To earn this level of certification, the CB Richard Ellis conference offset more than 200% percent of its carbon dioxide emissions that affect climate and more than 60% of each of the emissions covered by the program that affect health. The final report, containing graphics that show the sources of the emissions, the emissions and the offsets, can be downloaded from: www.leonardoacademy.org/Resources/reports/index.htm.
Greenbuild 2007 Conference Offsets Emissions

Leonardo Academy announced last week during the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Annual Greenbuild International Conference & Exposition, that this event is offsetting its emissions under Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener® Program which is dedicated to reducing and offsetting emissions to improve health and climate. For the sixth consecutive year, Leonardo Academy has donated its Cleaner and Greener® services to the USGBC for calculating emissions, gathering emission offsets, and certifying the level of offsets achieved. For this year's conference in Chicago, IL, the emission offsets already donated have offset 100 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions and average of 50 percent of each of the other types of emissions from projected energy use for travel to conference, meals, hotels and conference space based on preconference projected attendance.
Greenbuild Carbon Offset Donation Highlights Importance of Forest Sequestration

Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener Program announced last week that the international textile and chemical manufacturer Milliken & Company, a founding member of U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is donating more than 25 million pounds of carbon dioxide credits (11,364 metric tons) to offset all the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with the annual Greenbuild conference November 6-9 in Chicago. This donation is equivalent to offsetting the annual carbon dioxide emissions of more than 27 million miles of passenger car driving. The non-profit Leonardo Academy's Cleaner and Greener® program calculates all types of emissions caused by energy use for Greenbuild including participant travel to and from the event, hotel rooms and meals. Leonardo Academy then determines the total amount of emissions from the event and the amount of carbon reduction credits and other emission reductions necessary to balance or offset the event's emissions.
Cleaning Industry Climate Initiate Launched at the US Green Building Council's Annual Conference

The Green Cleaning Network and the Leonardo Academy announced last week at the U.S. Green Building Council's Greenbuild conference in Chicago, the launch of the Cleaning Industry Climate Initiative. The Cleaning Industry Climate Initiative makes it easy for cleaning companies to take immediate positive action to offset emissions caused by their energy use and transportation. An equally important component of the Cleaning Industry Climate Initiative is cleaning industry education and outreach on climate change to their clients. This outreach is a opportunity for the cleaning industry to make a major impact because the cleaning industry touches every commercial building every day. (PRWeb Nov 12, 2007)
