The relentless degeneration of cartilage frequently begins when people and pets are young and often progresses without signs of pain in the early stages. When the inevitable inflammatory pain of arthritis surfaces-- a twinge in the back getting out of bed or a knee that needs a few steps before putting full weight on it -people can turn to OTC painkillers, like aspirin or ibuprophen, for relief.
