Environment AND Housing Coalition Los Angeles (EAHCLA) Wins Court Victory Invalidating Controversial City Ordinance

A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge has ruled that the City of Los Angeles acted illegally when it approved a controversial "densification" ordinance without first conducting environmental review. The city enacted the ordinance pursuant to a state law that requires cities to award density bonuses to developers who include affordable housing units in their projects. The Los Angeles ordinance, however, allowed far greater density bonuses than were required, prompting community groups to fear it might actually lead to a net reduction in affordable housing within the city. EAHCLA hailed the ruling as an opportunity for the City to redraft the ordinance to advance the twin goals of affordable housing and environmental protection. (PRWeb Apr 14, 2009)
